Ottawa - Athletics Canada announced today the team that will compete at the 2009 Penn Relays in Philadelphia on April 25th. Canada will have two entries in the men’s 4x100-metre relay, an entry in the women’s 4x400-metres and will also send a men’s distance medley relay team.
A quartet of Canadian record holders will make up the men’s distance medley relay team with an eye on finishing first in Philadelphia. Matthew Lincoln from Scarborough, ON, Tyler Christopher of Edmonton, AB, Gary Reed from Victoria, BC, and Nathan Brannen from Cambridge, ON will race the 1200m, 400m, 800m and 1600m legs respectively in an attempt to win it all in Philadelphia.
Brannen, the Canadian mile indoor record holder, was a member of the 2008 Olympic Games team, and won the silver medal in the 1500-metres at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. 400-metres specialist Tyler Christopher won bronze at the 2005 World Championships, took gold at the 2008 World Indoor Championships, and owns the Canadian one-lap record of 44.44 seconds. Gary Reed won silver at the 2007 World Championships, finished 4th at the 2008 Olympic Games and owns the Canadian 800-metre record of 1 minute 43.68 seconds. Lincoln is a member of the 4x800-metre relay team which set a new Canadian record in 2007 of 7 minutes 22.83 seconds and is also a member of the 4x800-metres team that established a new indoor record earlier this season.
Canada’s best placing in the distance medley at Penn Relays was in 2007 with a 3rd place finish in a time of 9:30.20 (Matt Lincoln 3:01.10, Andrew Dargie 46.20, Geoff Harris 1:50.20, Kevin Sullivan 3:52.70).
